Why Symptoms Worse In Cold Weather: A sudden drop in temperature in winter is not just a matter of sleeping comfortably under a quilt, it can prove to be a big shock for the body. Cold weather aggravates many chronic diseases, due to which pain, stiffness and weakness can increase so much that even doing normal work becomes difficult. In many people, this condition leaves an almost paralyzing effect. The good thing is that these symptoms often subside when the cold subsides, but it is important to be careful.

How to avoid?

If you have to go out in winter, wear several layers of warm clothes and cover your head. Do not let the body get wet, because moisture causes body heat to dissipate quickly. Also, talk to your doctor about your family history and health screening so that the risks can be understood in advance. Edith C. Mbagwu, MD, DABOM, (Senior Lecturer in Family Medicine, University of Queensland Medical School) explains in her article that some of the diseases that occur during the winter season include psoriasis, in which the dry air of winter strips the skin of moisture, which can intensify the problem of skin cracking, burning and itching. Secondly, you may suffer from COPD, what happens is that cold air puts extra pressure on the lungs, this can increase the problem of shortness of breath, cough and mucus. Flu and asthma also make COPD worse. Apart from these-

flu

Flu virus spreads more rapidly in winter. Due to less sunlight, Vitamin D decreases and immunity becomes weak. Staying with infected people in closed rooms also increases the disease.

Asthma

Very cold air shrinks the tubes of the lungs, increasing the chances of an asthma attack.

Arthritis

Cold reduces blood flow in the joints, which increases stiffness, pain and swelling. Due to decrease in barometric pressure, body tissues expand and pressure on the veins increases. Therefore, patients suffering from joint diseases should continue light exercise even in cold.

Raynaud’s disease

In this disease the blood vessels of fingers and toes shrink. Cold air further increases this effect, causing pain, numbness and discoloration of the skin.
