Pakistan has once again given a poisonous statement against India regarding SAARC, the oldest regional organization of South Asia. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry says that because of India this organization has become almost inactive, whereas it is very important for the entire region. This statement has again exposed the tension between the two countries.
Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said, ‘India has been continuously blocking the SAARC process and that is why this organization is unable to play its real role.’ PAK Foreign Ministry claimed that New Delhi often falsely propagates that SAARC was not able to move forward because the event was to be held in Islamabad. According to Pakistan, this is not the first time. India had also stopped the SAARC summit in the 1990s.
Trying for new alliance with China and Bangladesh
Meanwhile, there is news that Pakistan is trying to form a new South Asia Regional Group with Bangladesh and China. This is being considered a strategy to reduce India’s influence. Bangladesh’s foreign affairs advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hossain also indicated that Dhaka is considering the possibility of this new group.
Why did SAARC become inactive?
SAARC includes eight countries. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. At one time this platform was considered the voice of South Asia, but it has been stalled for the last ten years. After the Kathmandu Summit in 2014, the meetings scheduled for two years could not be held. The main reason for this is considered to be the continuously deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan.
India’s reaction?
There has been no official comment on this statement from India, but India has been saying earlier also that SAARC cannot move forward in the environment of cross-border terrorism. India says that first Pakistan will have to create an atmosphere of peace in the region, only then a new meeting of SAARC is possible.
