This incident, which came to light from Nawada district of Bihar, not only raises questions on law and order, but also shows a scary picture of hatred spreading within the society. In the mob lynching that took place on December 5 in Bhatta village of Roh block, 35-year-old Athar Hussain, a resident of Nalanda district, was brutally beaten by the mob. He died during treatment at Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital on the night of 12 December. The entire area is shocked by the death of Athar and a mountain of sorrow has fallen on the family.
Were selling clothes in this area for 20 years
Athar Hussain was supporting his family by selling clothes in Roh and surrounding areas for the last 20 years. Almost everyone in the area knew him. His in-laws’ house was also in Marui village of this area. Despite this, the manner in which he was brutally treated has shocked every sensitive person.
The mood of the crowd changed after asking the name and religion.
Athar Hussain had told before his death that he was returning from Dumri village on the evening of 5th December. It was dark when 6-7 drunk youths surrounded him near Bhatta village. First the home address was asked, then the name.
As soon as Athar revealed his name as “Mohammed Athar Hussain”, the mood of the crowd changed. They were forcibly taken off the bicycle, looted of their money and dragged into a room with their hands and legs tied.
Athar had told before his death that the fighting did not stop here. The pants were opened and the private parts were searched, so that it could be confirmed that he was a Muslim. After this, petrol was poured on the body and an iron rod was heated and fired on the hands, feet, fingers and many other parts of the body. Fingers were broken and the sole of the hand was badly burnt. Even an attempt was made to cut off the ear with a file. During this, 10-15 people kept beating him with sticks and rods.
On the night of 7th December, lying in Nawada Sadar Hospital, Athar narrated his entire ordeal in a trembling voice. He had said, “Every child knows me, yet this was done to me.” In the video, he tells how after giving his name, he was thrown off the bicycle, robbed of money and then locked in a room and burnt with petrol. There was pain in his eyes, but hope for justice was visible in his voice.
Body broken during treatment, life lost due to death
The police admitted Athar to the hospital in critical condition. First he was referred to Nawada, then to Bihar Sharif, but the wounds were so deep that the body started responding. Athar died during treatment on the night of 12 December. The postmortem was conducted at Nalanda Sadar Hospital under the supervision of the forensic team and magistrate.
Mohammad Saqib, brother of the deceased, says that Athar was a hard-working person and had no enmity with anyone. He was killed just because of his name and religion. The family has demanded the harshest punishment for the accused.
Roh police station in-charge Ranjan Kumar said that an FIR has been registered regarding the incident of December 5. Till now 4 accused Sonu Kumar, Ranjan Kumar, Sachin Kumar and Shri Kumar have been arrested. The search for other absconding accused is going on. Police say that the matter is being investigated seriously.
Increasing incidents of mob lynching in Nawada
This incident is not an isolated incident. In 2025 itself, many incidents of mob lynching have come to light in Nawada. In February, two youths were beaten up on suspicion of theft, in which one died, and in August, an elderly couple was attacked on suspicion of witchcraft, in which the husband lost his life. Such cases have raised big questions on law and order and social thinking in Nawada.
Athar Hussain’s death is not just the death of an individual, but a deep stain on the face of the society. The question is, for how long will a person’s life continue to be taken by asking his name and religion, and when will the law stop being crushed at the hands of the mob?
