Indian cricket’s rising star Vaibhav Suryavanshi once again created a stir with his bat at the end of the year 2025. In the very first match of Under-19 Asia Cup 2025, he played an explosive inning of 171 runs against UAE. To accomplish such a feat at the age of 14 is special in itself. Vaibhav hit 14 sixes and 9 fours in this innings and completed his century in just 56 balls. Despite this, this innings was not included in the official record book of ICC. Now the question is, why?
How special was Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s innings?
Vaibhav scored 171 runs in 95 balls at a strike rate of 180. He completed his half-century in 30 balls, century in 56 balls and 150 runs in 84 balls. If this innings was considered official, it would have been the third fastest century in Youth ODI cricket. Not only this, hitting 14 sixes in an innings could also have become a world record.
Why was this innings not included in ICC records?
The real reason is ICC rules. This match played between India and UAE was not an official Youth ODI. UAE is an associate country. Due to this, only those matches in the Under-19 Asia Cup get the status of Youth ODI in which both the teams are Test playing countries. For this reason, this innings of Vaibhav was not recorded in the record book.
Which matches get the status of Youth ODI?
According to ICC, the matches played against associate countries in the Under-19 World Cup are considered as Youth ODI. However, in tournaments like Asia Cup, only the matches of Test playing countries get this status. This is the reason why matches like India-Pakistan are official, but not India-UAE.
How is the official record of Vaibhav Suryavanshi?
Despite this innings not being included in the record books, Vaibhav’s career is full of statistics. He has one official Youth ODI century in his name, scored against England Under-19. Apart from this, he also has two centuries and one half-century in his account in youth test cricket.
