Who decides the player’s base price?
In the IPL auction system, the base price of any player is not decided by the BCCI or the franchise. When players register for the auction, they have to choose a base price from the slabs decided by the IPL.

Although players decide their own base price, they have to do so within the fixed price bracket decided by the IPL Governing Council. For unpacked players for IPL 2026, there are usually working slabs like Rs 20 lakh or Rs 30 lakh. Whereas capped international players can choose higher slabs up to Rs 2 crore.
Why do many players choose a low base price?
A low base price is often a strategic move. When a player comes in the auction at Rs 30 lakh or Rs 50 lakh, more franchises are ready to bid, due to which the competition increases. By the end the price becomes much higher than the base price. Many players who are confident in their demand deliberately keep their base price low so as to generate maximum interest.
Risk of choosing a high base price
There is a lot of risk in this. This is because if a player keeps his base price at Rs 1.5 crore or Rs 2 crore, the franchise may hesitate due to limited purse or squad balance concerns. In such a case, even capable players can remain unsold.
