New avenues will open for private companies in the nuclear sector, know how the Shanti Bill will benefit?

Shanti Bill: President Draupadi Murmu on Sunday approved the Peace Bill 2025 passed in the winter session of Parliament. The full name of SHANTI Bill is Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI). With this, now private sector companies will also get many opportunities in this sector and the government’s monopoly will end. One objective of passing this bill is to achieve the target of 100 GW nuclear energy by the year 2047, which government companies will not be able to achieve on their own. For this, help of private companies will also be required.

Let us tell you that at present, under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, only the Central Government and its owned companies have the right to build and run nuclear power plants. Private companies are not allowed to interfere in this. But now with the new peace bill, Atomic Energy Act, 1962 and Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 are being repealed. This will improve the legal framework regarding controlling nuclear energy. This will open avenues for new investment in the sector and will also provide support for technical cooperation.

Adani Group eyes nuclear sector

In this sequence, Adani Group, led by Asia’s second richest man and business tycoon Gautam Adani, is preparing to rapidly expand its Artificial Intelligence data centers and the energy infrastructure required to support them. His younger son Jeet Adani told Nikkei Asia that demand for data centers is growing rapidly and India is currently in a good position to build AI data centers due to low costs and recent changes in energy regulations. This will be a natural benefit to the country.

Why is the demand for data centers increasing?

From online shopping to digital payments, various types of apps and online videos, the demand for data is increasing rapidly in India due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). As a result, demand for data centers is also increasing.

Since data centers are operational 24*7, they require electricity on a large scale, hence companies can meet their needs of baseload power by installing nuclear power plants and since it is a big source of clean energy, it will reduce greenhouse gases and will prove to be better for the environment. With the entry of private companies in the nuclear sector, investment will increase, projects will be completed faster, production will start sooner, dependence on renewable energy sources will increase, employment will increase, more electricity needs will be met.

What is the plan of Adani Group?

It is being told that Adani Group is planning to use its large renewable energy base to meet the increasing electricity needs of the AI data center. Or rather, the company is thinking of setting up a nuclear plant.

Adani Green Energy is already at the forefront in solar and wind power in the country. Now its plan is to invest up to 5 billion dollars in building an Artificial Intelligence data center project for Google. Jeet Adani says that his company can provide renewable power as per the needs of big global tech companies and then according to the demand, the energy infrastructure can be further expanded in different phases.

Jeet Adani said that nuclear energy was ignored for years, whereas it can play an important role in meeting long-term electricity needs. Under this plan, the group will own and operate the power plants, while the reactors will be constructed by specialized partners.
