The products made by the hands of prisoners lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail will now reach the common people online. Till now these items were limited to the court premises and jail canteen, but now they have been launched on the digital platform. Tihar Jail administration has recently listed some products made by prisoners on the government app MyStore. Sale started on MyStore app
According to officials associated with Tihar Jail administration, currently 13 types of products are being sold on MyStore. These include Tihar brand mustard oil, different types of cookies and some handicraft items. My Store is a market place which is owned by the government. ONDC Networked and designed for Indian sellers. The items made available on the online platform include coconut, flour, cumin, milk cream, sweet jalebi, oats and cookies like Nankhatai. Apart from this, teakwood Ganesh showpieces made by the hands of prisoners are also being sold.
Preparations are also being made to launch it on Amazon and Flipkart.
Tihar Jail administration says that if the sales experience on MyStore is good, then in the coming time these products can also be launched on big e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon. Tihar Jail DG S. B. Of. Singh has also confirmed this initiative.
How does work work in Tihar Jail Factory?
There are about 20 thousand prisoners in Tihar, considered the largest jail in Asia. Of these, about 500 prisoners work in the jail factory every day from 8 am to 4 pm. Apart from bakery products, jute bags, school furniture, handmade sarees, cardboard, files and papers used in the Supreme Court are also produced here. According to officials, Tihar’s bakery unit is the largest, where about 70 types of products are made. In the year 2024, there was a turnover of about Rs 8 crore from bakery products alone, while an earning of about Rs 11 crore was recorded from the other units.
Where are Tihar products sold?
Currently, Tihar products are sold in all the District Courts of Delhi, Delhi High Court, Jail Canteen, Tihar Haat and Tihar Emporia. Apart from this, prisoners also use them inside the jail. In recent months, demand especially for bakery items has increased rapidly. At the same time, the prisoners working in the jail factory are given a daily wage of about Rs 412, which is deposited in their bank account. Every month prisoners can send this money to their families. Apart from this, officials say that increasing online sales will improve the income of prisoners and it is also an important part of their reform process. Apart from this, according to Tihar officials, like Tihar, units for making products by the hands of prisoners are already working in the jails of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
