America has attacked ISIS fighters in north-west Nigeria on the occasion of Christmas. US President Donald Trump gave this information through social media and the Nigerian government has also confirmed the attack in a press release. Former Ambassador Mahesh Sachdeva had a special conversation with IANS regarding America’s attack on Nigeria.
Former Ambassador Mahesh Sachdeva said, ‘There can be a debate on what impact the US missile attack will have on Nigeria’s security and it can further increase anti-Christian tensions. ‘Most of the violence is perpetrated by Boko Haram and ISIS targeting government officials, and civilians are often caught in the crossfire.’
“In central Nigeria, the conflicts are not based on religion, but over herders’ land between the migrating Fulani group and Christian villages,” he said. At home, America’s action may appeal to its largely Christian MAGA base, and it could be portrayed as protecting Christians in Africa’s most populous country.
Regarding Trump’s statement about the US strike in north-west Nigeria, former diplomat Mahesh Sachdeva said, ‘As a former High Commissioner to Nigeria, I pay attention to this very important development. This is the first time the US has intervened militarily in Nigeria’s security, and launched long-range missiles over Nigerian territory to target the ISIS base in Sokoto, north-western Nigeria. This action taken on Christmas Day sends a clear message to ISIS that America will intervene to protect Christians from attacks.
The US President had already warned about the continuous attacks on Christians in Nigeria. He had said that if this does not stop, America will attack. “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorists in northwest Nigeria,” Trump said in a post on his Truth social platform on Thursday. The terrorists mainly targeted innocent Christians and killed them with brutality, which was not seen in many years and centuries. I had already warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the massacre of Christians, they would have to face the consequences and that is what happened tonight.”
The US Army’s Africa Command said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that the airstrike was carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities. ‘Many terrorists’ were killed in this. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote, ‘I am grateful for the support and cooperation of the Nigerian government.’
