The political situation in Bangladesh is changing rapidly after the announcement of election dates. On one hand, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League has been banned, while on the other hand, BNP’s working president Tariq Rahman has returned to Bangladesh after 17 years. A crowd of lakhs on the streets of Dhaka welcomed Khaleda Zia’s son wholeheartedly, which has given sleepless nights to Pakistan-friendly Jamaat-e-Islami. India is keeping a close eye on the political situation in its neighboring country.
Tariq Rahman is currently recognized as a leader who considers Bangladesh paramount. Besides, it also recognizes the historical relations between India and Bangladesh. On the other hand, Jamaat is only involved in anti-India activities. He does not care about those issues like national security, education, poverty. Tariq Rahman, while addressing a rally in Dhaka, explained his vision for Bangladesh.
Tariq Rahman, a believer in Islam, sees Bangladesh as a country that provides space and security for people of all religions rather than leading them on the path of religious extremism. He also clarified his foreign policy stance. He said, Bangladesh is a country where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians all live equally. We want to build a secure Bangladesh. A country where if any woman, man or child leaves the house safely, he can return safely.
Tariq Rehman clearly said in his speech that neither Delhi, nor Pindi (Rawalpindi), Bangladesh first. This indicates distance from both Pakistan (Pindi) and India (Delhi). Tariq Rehman’s image of focusing on Bangladesh can take BNP away from Pakistan. BNP is now considering Jamaat, which is believed to be linked to Pakistan’s ISI, as its main opponent. BNP has refused alliance with Jamaat before the elections. Doing this is an attempt to show BNP as secular and Bangladesh as a democratic country again.
Tariq Rehman’s speech given on 25 December 2025 did not directly mention the name of former PM Sheikh Hasina even once. He admitted that there has been a change in Bangladesh after his exile. He praised his country’s infrastructure and development so far. His stance before the elections is considered very important because BNP and especially Tariq Rehman has been a big critic of Awami League. In such a situation, his statement recognizes the achievements of the Hasina government’s tenure (2009-2024).
