Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet US President Trump in Florida on Sunday (28 December 2025). With this, the hope of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine has been rekindled. Zelensky told that his meeting with Trump is to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. He said that the 20-point peace plan will be finalized soon.
What does Zelensky want?
This meeting between Trump and Zelensky is taking place at a time when America is leading the diplomatic initiative to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Earlier this week, Zelensky had said that if Russia withdrew its troops from parts of the eastern industrial region, Ukraine would also consider doing the same. According to Zelensky’s proposal, this area should become a demilitarized zone, whose monitoring should be in the hands of international forces.
Russia wants control over Donbass
Russia said that it will not accept any proposal of Zelensky. The Kremlin is adamant that Ukraine hand over the area under its control in Donbass to the Russian army, which Kiev has rejected. Russian forces currently occupy most of Luhansk and about 70 percent of Donetsk, both areas which are part of Donbass.
The Kremlin has said that Moscow is analyzing a peace proposal presented regarding Ukraine. This proposal was submitted by a special envoy of Russia after a recent meeting with US officials. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov gave this information on Thursday. Peskov said that Russia is investigating the information provided by Kirill Dmitriev, the President’s Special Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation.
Russian-American officials met
Dmitriev spoke to US officials in Miami last week. Peskov said, ‘We are analyzing all this and after that, according to the decision taken by the head of state, further consultations will be continued with the American side.’ Earlier, Peskov had said that Dmitriev had informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the results of the Miami trip. The delegations of Russia and Ukraine held separate talks with the US in Florida on Sunday (21 December 2025).
According to Russian news agency Sputnik, Dmitry told the media that despite the efforts of warmongers, Russia-US talks could not be disrupted. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday that its ‘Southern Group of Forces’ unit has taken control of the Sviato-Pokrovske settlement located in the Donetsk region.
