In today’s busy life, we often eat dinner late at night and sleep immediately. Sometimes due to work, sometimes due to mobile or watching TV, we lose track of time. Do you know how much the right time of eating at night affects your sleep, digestion and overall health. Be it Ayurveda or doctors, both insist that it is very important to have a complete gap of time between eating and sleeping.

By eating at the right time, not only is the food digested properly, but sleep also becomes deep and peaceful. In such a situation, let us tell you today how long should you have food before sleeping. What do Ayurveda and doctors say on this?

How long should you eat before sleeping?

According to Ayurveda and doctors, for good digestion and better sleep, dinner should be eaten at least 2 to 3 hours before sleeping. By giving this much time, the food gets a chance to be digested properly and the risk of problems like acidity, gas or heartburn is reduced. For people who suffer from GERD or frequent acid reflux, keeping this gap of 3 hours or more is considered more beneficial. For example, if you sleep at 10 pm, you should eat food between 7 to 8 pm, and if you sleep at 11 pm, it is better to eat food by 8 pm, so that the stomach remains light at the time of sleeping and you get good deep sleep.

Why is the difference between eating and sleeping important?

1. Eating is done properly – After eating food, the body needs time to digest it. If we lie down immediately, the digestion process does not happen properly.

2. Protection from acidity and heartburn – Lying down immediately after eating can cause stomach acid to come upward, which can cause problems like acid reflux, heartburn, sour belching.

3. For good and deep sleep – During sleep, the body repairs itself, gives rest to the mind and maintains hormonal balance. If the stomach is heavy or digestion is going on, then sleep gets interrupted again and again.

4. For weight and metabolism – Eating late at night slows down metabolism, causes fat accumulation and increases the risk of weight gain.

What should be eaten at night and what not?

At night, you can eat light and easily digestible food like boiled or lightly cooked vegetables, pulses, khichdi, small amount of roti or rice, lukewarm milk (with turmeric), some almonds or walnuts and plain curd (in small quantities). At the same time, avoid eating very heavy food, fried and spicy food, excessive sweets or sweet snacks, caffeine (tea, coffee), fruits (especially very sweet or heavy fruits) late at night.
