Indian Police Service officer Sadanand Date will now be the Director General of Maharashtra Police i.e. DGP. He will assume office on January 3. Till now the head of the state police was Rashmi Shukla.
An official statement said – The tenure of Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra State Rashmi Shukla, Indian Police Service, on the post of ‘Director General of Police, Maharashtra State’ is ending on 03 January 2026.
How many years will be the tenure of Maharashtra DGP?
It was said that – Keeping this in mind, Sadanand Vasant Date, Indian Police Service (Maharashtra Cadre: 1990), included in the panel recommended by the Empanelment Committee of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has been appointed to the post of ‘Director General of Police, Maharashtra State (HOPF).
The statement said – According to the relevant decisions and orders of the Supreme Court, the tenure of the Indian Police Service officer appointed to the post of ‘Director General of Police (HOPF)’, irrespective of the date of retirement, will be two years. Accordingly, the tenure of Sadanand Vasant Date, Indian Police Service, on the post of ‘Director General of Police, Maharashtra State (HOPF)’ will be for the next two years from the date of appointment.

Date was the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from April 1, 2024. Before this, he has served as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in CBI, Chief of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime and Law and Order) in Mumbai, Police Commissioner of Mira-Bhayander and Vasai-Virar region.
Talking about Date’s education, he is a Postgraduate in Commerce, Doctorate (Ph.D.) from Savitribai Phule Pune University, Qualified Cost and Management Accountant from the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and studied White-Collar and Organized Crime Control at the University of Minnesota under Humphrey Fellowship.
During the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks (2008), Date was one of the first to reach Cama Hospital. He fought terrorists and helped save lives. Awarded the President’s Police Gallantry Medal for bravery and ensuring the safety of people during the attack.
