How Sleeping Position Affects Face: We often pay attention to skincare products, treatments and diet to reduce the effects of age, but one important thing which is less discussed is the way of sleeping. In fact, the position you sleep in can quietly play a role in making your skin look prematurely aged. Have you ever felt deep lines on your cheeks or puffiness around your eyes as soon as you wake up in the morning? Initially, these marks heal on their own after some time, but if this happens every day, it can gradually affect the elasticity of the skin and the facial structure. The question is, can certain sleep positions cause wrinkles or loose skin in the long run? Let us tell you the truth behind this.

What do experts say

Dr Lakshya Bhaktyani, physiotherapist at PSRI Hospital, told The Indian Express that certain sleep positions can actually increase skin ageing. According to him, sleeping on the side or stomach presses the face against the pillow, which creates friction and pressure. If this happens for a long time, sleep lines can form, which later turn into permanent wrinkles. These wrinkles are especially visible around the cheeks, forehead and chin. Sleeping on the side also increases the risk of skin becoming loose near the jaw and neck due to gravity.

affects the skin

Many people notice swelling or creases on their face as soon as they wake up in the morning. These are usually temporary and occur due to pressure or fluid retention during sleep. But if this pattern continues daily for a long time, the collagen structure and elasticity of the skin can gradually get affected. Persistent swelling can sometimes be a sign of lack of lymphatic drainage or an internal problem, although in most cases it is related to pressure on the face during sleep.

Choosing the right pillow and clothes can also be helpful in protecting the skin. According to Dr., silk or satin pillow covers cause less friction than cotton, which leads to less creases in the skin. Orthopedic or memory foam pillows provide better support and reduce pressure on the face. If we talk about the best sleep position for the skin, then sleeping on the back is considered the safest. This does not cause direct pressure on the face. Sleeping with the head slightly elevated can also prevent accumulation of fluid around the eyes, which reduces morning swelling.
