Veteran Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie was appointed the head coach of the Pakistan Test team in April 2024. It had been only 8 months since he became the coach, when after the conclusion of the Pakistan vs South Africa Test series, he resigned from the post of head coach. Now Gillespie himself has told why he had to leave his post as coach.
During a Q&A session on social media platform Gillespie also revealed that the PCB did not even consult assistant coach Tim Nielsen before firing him.
Why did you leave Pakistan cricket team?
During the Q&A session, a fan asked Gillespie what he had to say on the Pakistan Super League (PSL). In response, Gillespie called PSL a good league, but then a fan raised another question that if Gillespie liked PSL so much, then why did he leave the Pakistan cricket team.
Jason Gillespie made a big disclosure saying, “I was the coach of the Pakistan Test team. The PCB had fired our senior assistant coach without talking to me or consulting me. Being the head coach of the team, I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were many other issues due to which I felt humiliated.”
Pakistan team’s performance under Gillespie
The performance of Pakistan Test team under Jason Gillespie was not good. After becoming its coach, Pakistan team lost 0-2 to Bangladesh in the home Test series. But the Pakistan team made a comeback and defeated England 2-1 in the home series. Gillespie was not able to agree with the PCB officials on the decisions taken regarding team selection and coaching staff.
