For the last few months, an interesting change is being seen in many schools of the country. Teachers are surprised that suddenly students’ homework has not only started arriving on time, but its language, cleanliness and presentation have also become much better than before. Initially the teachers felt that perhaps the children had started working harder, but when investigated in depth, it came to light that Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI played a big role in this change.
Free AI tools are easily available today. With their help, children are solving mathematics problems, writing long essays and also preparing projects. In many cases, students simply enter the question and get the complete answer within a few seconds. This is the reason why teachers in many schools took time to understand how children’s work suddenly became so perfect.
According to media reports, Preeti Sreedharan, a teacher at KC High International School, Chennai, also went through a similar experience. After seeing some of the assignments, he suspected that the language was much better than the normal level of the children. After this the school took the help of platforms like ‘Turnitin’. Earlier this tool used to capture only copy-paste and content taken from the internet, but now it has started recognizing the content generated by AI also. Teachers are getting a lot of help from this.
However, the story does not end here. Some students have become so clever that they slightly alter the answers given by AI, move words around or use paraphrasing tools, so as not to get caught. In such cases, it becomes even more difficult for teachers to catch cheating.
Special training program started
Keeping in view this changing era, IIT Madras has also started special training programs for teachers. In these training, teachers are being told how to use AI not as an enemy but as a helper. They are being taught how to make studies easier with the help of AI and also how to detect cheating. Many teachers believe that if AI is used properly, it can further improve the level of education.
What do experts say?
Education experts say that now just changing the method of copy checking will not work. Assignments will also have to be made more creative. Such questions will have to be asked in which children will have to write about their experiences, thoughts and understanding. For example, questions like “Explain this topic with examples from around you” may be more effective instead of just “Write an essay on this topic.” This will give children a chance to think for themselves and it will become difficult to depend completely on AI.
