At the beginning of the new year, the Delhi government has decided to provide major relief to poor and needy families. Free sugar distribution under Antyodaya Anna Yojana has been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

This decision will be applicable in Delhi from January 2026 to March 2027 and its benefit will be available to all AAY cardholders. This decision of the government is being considered as a big gift for the people of Delhi on the New Year, especially the economically weaker section, which will provide direct relief to lakhs of families.

Sugar free for 15 months!

It was decided in the cabinet meeting that free sugar will be provided to all the eligible families covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana for a total of 15 months. This period has been fixed from January 2026 to March 2027. The government believes that in times of inflation, rising prices of food items have a direct impact on the kitchens of poor families. In such a situation, this decision of free sugar distribution will prove helpful in meeting the daily needs.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on this decision that the welfare of the poor and needy is the top priority of the Delhi government. He clarified that the aim of the government is to ensure that no poor family is deprived of basic needs. Providing food security, social justice and equal opportunities is an important part of the government’s policies. According to the Chief Minister, such decisions are concrete steps taken towards providing a dignified life to the weaker section of the society.

What is Antyodaya Anna Yojana?

Antyodaya Anna Yojana is an important scheme of the Government of India, whose objective is to provide food at affordable rates to the poorest of the poor families. Under this scheme, destitute, elderly, disabled, landless laborers and families belonging to extremely weaker sections are included. Each AAY family is provided 35 kg of food grains, which includes wheat and rice, per month. This scheme comes under the National Food Security Act and is an important means of ensuring food security in the country. The Delhi government’s decision to distribute free sugar will further increase the benefits of this scheme, which will provide long-term relief to lakhs of poor families.
