Bangladesh Travel Ban on Israel: Taking a major diplomatic and political decision, the interim government of Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh has again banned the visit of Bangladeshi citizens to Israel. Under this decision, it will now be written on Bangladeshi passport that this passport is valid for all countries of the world, except Israel.
This clause used to be in passport even before 2021, but it was removed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. Four years later, this policy has been re -implemented. Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs Neelima Afroz said that on 7 April 2024, an official instruction has been issued to the Passport Department.
Why was this decision taken?
In recent months in Bangladesh, there have been fierce protests against the Israeli attacks in Gaza. Especially in areas like Dhaka University and Sohravardi Park, a crowd of millions has lodged a protest against Israel. There have been attacks on the stores selling Israeli products in many cities. The religious religious groups have pressurized the government to take a tough stance against Israel. There has been two huge protests against Israel, which has led to two huge protests against Israel, which has increased the concern of the interim government. In view of this, the Yunus government has taken this drastic decision.
Change in passport
Adding ‘Claus’ in the passport brings several influences to the citizens of Bangladesh: Citizens traveling to Israel may be eligible for legal action. Violation of this rule can be considered as anti-national act. The possibility of any kind of improvement in the relationship of Israel-Bangladesh is now reduced. Bangladesh tries to present itself as an anti -Israel leadership in the Muslim world.
2021 exemption and its importance
Sheikh Hasina’s government lifted this ban from passport in 2021. It was seen as an indication of an inclusive and liberal international policy from Bangladesh. There were also signs of back-channel diplomacy with Israel, but this generosity has now been withdrawn due to the current performance and Gaza crisis.
Impact of Gaza crisis
More than 50,000 people have died so far in the conflict continued since October 2023 in Gaza Strip. It has become a touching issue in Bangladesh. The hashtags like #FreePaalestine are trending on social media. The news of the death of children and women in Gaza has deepened public outrage. Due to this, the pressure of policy change on the government increased day by day.
