NHS Doctor Advice For Women: The year 2026 has arrived, but despite this, vaginal health is still one of the least talked about health related things. Misunderstandings, hesitation and incomplete information still persist among women. Those companies that sell special washes, wipes, lightening creams and perfumes benefit the most from this. NHS doctor Ameer Khan from Bradford, West Yorkshire, has broken some of the common myths related to vaginal health, which many women still believe.
Myth 1: Special soap or wash is necessary to keep the vagina clean
Many scented soaps, wipes and sprays in the market claim that they keep the vagina clean. But the truth is that they are not needed. According to the doctor, the vagina is capable of cleaning itself. It contains a perfect balance of bacteria and pH. Scented products can disturb this balance and cause infection.
Myth 2: Discharge means there is a problem
Women often think that vaginal discharge is a sign of some disease. Whereas this does not always happen. Most women have daily discharge and this is a way to keep the vagina healthy. If there is a sudden change in color, odor or texture, then investigation is necessary. But white or clear discharge is usually normal.
Myth 3: If you smell, you are dirty
Many women have this misconception that they should smell like flowers from below. The truth is that every vagina has a natural smell and this is completely normal. This does not mean that you do not maintain cleanliness. If the smell suddenly becomes stronger or changes, then you should consult a doctor, but it is wrong to expect a fragrance like perfume.
Myth 4: Tampons can get ‘lost’ inside
Many women are afraid of using tampons because they think that they may get lost inside the vagina. Doctors clearly say that this cannot happen. Above the vagina is the cervix, which is like a closed door. The tampon cannot go further than that. Sometimes it goes up a little, but it does not disappear and the doctor can easily remove it. There is no need to panic.
Dr. Khan says that the next time someone tries to sell you feminine wash or spread fear about tampons, remember that the vagina has been taking care of itself for millions of years.
