Congress MP and CWC member Shashi Tharoor said on Monday (January 05, 2025) that he has never deviated from the party line. His recent statements and articles had put the party on the defensive.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the ‘Mission 2026’ leadership camp organized by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee in Sultan Bathery to prepare the strategy for the upcoming state assembly elections.

He said, ‘My question is who said that I have violated the ideology of the party? I have expressed my opinion on various subjects, but in most cases the party and I have stuck to the same stand.

Tharoor said the questions he raised with ministers in Parliament had a clear direction and the party should not be troubled by them. He said that controversies often arise when media reports are based only on headlines without reading the entire content.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP said, ‘When I ask people whether they have actually read what I have written, most people have not. After reading the entire text, they understand the real issue.

He said that he has been in the party for 17 years and has good relations with his colleagues. The Congress MP said, ‘There is no need for any sudden misunderstanding right now.’

I contested elections and lost…the matter is over: Tharoor

When asked whether these issues started after contesting the elections for the post of Congress President. Tharoor said the party follows democratic traditions and many leaders have contested internal elections in the past. He said, ‘I contested the elections and lost. The matter ended here. I don’t see any story in this. There have been many elections in the history of the party and there have been victories and defeats in many of them.

On his remarks defending senior BJP leader LK Advani, Tharoor said it was an act of courtesy on Advani’s 98th birthday. He said, ‘Our culture teaches us to respect elders and I did the same.’

Referring to another controversy over statements seen as praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tharoor said he had only quoted what he said at a public event. He said, ‘I asked people where I had praised him. If someone reads the entire post, it will become clear that there was nothing like that in it.

Regarding Kerala Assembly elections and selection of candidates, Tharoor said that party leaders will be consulted. He also said that he has good relations with the leaders of the state. Tharoor said, ‘I speak and write for those who migrate to other states and countries in search of a future.’ He said that Kerala should open doors to investment to create more opportunities.

He said that the party will stand united with the people and is confident that the UDF will come to power in Kerala. Regarding Congress’s claim of winning 100 seats, Tharoor said that the Leader of Opposition had made this claim and it is possible.

He said, ‘You should remember that in 2021, even during the Covid-19 pandemic, I campaigned in 56 assembly constituencies. I have always been campaigning in the assembly elections and this time you will see me even more active.
