Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was detained after the US military action, was presented in the Federal Court of New York on Monday (January 5, 2026). During his first appearance in court, Maduro was accused of serious charges related to narco-terrorism, money laundering and drug trafficking. Maduro’s court appearance has created a new stir in international political and diplomatic circles.
The most shocking thing about this case was that America’s famous lawyer Barry J. Pollock appeared in court. Barry Pollock is the same lawyer who played an important role in getting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange out of America’s legal custody. Barry Pollock is a member of the Washington-based law firm Harris St. He is a partner at Laurent & Wechsler and is an expert in national security, international law and high-profile cases.
Three decades of legal experience
Barry Pollock’s legal career has spanned more than 30 years. He has successfully defended many corporate tycoons, politicians and accused in international cases. He also played an important role in the high-profile case of overturning the conviction of Martin Tankleff, who was proven innocent after being in jail for 17 years. Because of this experience, Maduro has chosen him as his chief lawyer.
Maduro’s wife’s separate lawyer
According to court documents, Nicolas Maduro’s wife Celia Flores is being defended separately. Mark E. Donnelly appeared in the court on his behalf, who has been a former prosecutor of the US Justice Department. Donnelly confirmed in court that he would provide legal representation to Flores.
Maduro declared himself innocent in court
During the hearing that lasted for about 30 minutes, Nicolas Maduro clearly told the court that he was innocent and that he had been forcibly brought to America. He denied all the allegations calling it kidnapping. Celia Flores also declared herself innocent in the court.
Next hearing date fixed
This case is being heard by US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein. The court has fixed March 17 as the next hearing date. It is believed that this matter may create a bigger controversy in international politics in the coming days.
