This is going to happen for the first time in Delhi when metro trains, vehicles running on flyovers and buses on the road will run on the same pillar. This change will happen through three double-decker corridors being prepared under Delhi Metro Phase-4. According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, these projects will open to the public in different phases in 2026 and will provide great relief to the traffic problem of the capital.
Phase-4 Innovation: Concept of Double-Decker Viaduct
Double-decker viaduct technology is being used for the first time in DMRC’s Phase-4 expansion, where metro trains will run on the upper level and there will be a six-lane flyover on the lower deck. Normal road traffic will continue at ground level. This structure will not only save land but will also reduce the construction cost. A total of 65 kilometers of new metro lines are being laid in the three priority corridors, in which the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor has reached the most advanced stage.
Big change in traffic from Bhajanpura to Sangam Vihar
Under the Pink Line extension, the Bhajanpura-Yamuna Vihar section on the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor is 1.4 km long and is considered to be the most ready section so far. The metro viaduct has been completely constructed and trial runs have also been completed. The main structure of the lower flyover is ready, while the ramp construction has been expedited after permission to cut trees. As soon as this starts, the busy traffic signal of Bhajanpura will end. Whereas in the Sangam Vihar-Ambedkar Nagar section of the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor on the Golden Line, more than 85 percent of the pillars have been ready and deck slab casting is in progress.
Relief to South Delhi and expansion of metro network
Under the Magenta Line extension, a double-decker flyover is being built on GT Road between Azadpur to Ashok Vihar and Derawal Nagar. Here 70 percent foundation and pillar work has been completed. According to Zee Media, this flyover will pass over Azadpur vegetable market and will reduce traffic jam in areas like Derawal Nagar, Vijay Nagar and Rana Pratap Bagh. According to DMRC officials, despite the delay caused by Covid-19 and permissions, the work is progressing rapidly. With the commissioning of these corridors by 2026, Delhi’s metro network will be more than 400 kilometers long and the travel time will reduce significantly.
