After Donald Trump mentioned Greenland after taking action against Venezuela, speculations are being made as to which country is America’s next target. Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if America attacks any other NATO country, everything will stop.
Everything including NATO will stop: Danish PM
In an interview with Danish broadcaster DR, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if the US uses force against another NATO member country, everything will stop. During the podcast, Frederickson also criticized new comments made by US President Donald Trump and described his words as acceptable pressure on the self-governing region. The US President has said in his recent statement that America needs Greenland.
‘The American President should be taken seriously’
The Danish Prime Minister said, ‘Unfortunately I think the US President should be taken seriously when he says he wants Greenland. Both Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected any idea of Greenland becoming part of the US. She further said that although she could not account for US actions, there was full support from Europe that borders should be respected.
After taking action against Venezuela, Trump has now commented about Greenland. He brought back the idea of acquiring Greenland and described the Arctic region as important for American defense. Since then, European leaders have stood in support of Denmark for its strength. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confaverex, in an interview with local media, expressed solidarity with Denmark and said, ‘The border cannot be changed by force.’
NATO country’s statement after Trump’s threat
Apart from this, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, ‘Greenland’s future belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland itself.’ According to Xinhua news agency, German Foreign Minister Johann Wedfulf said that Greenland, being part of Denmark, would actually fall under NATO’s collective defense responsibilities. On Sunday, Trump said in a telephone interview with The Atlantic that America absolutely needs Greenland.
In response, PM Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday (January 4, 2026) that America has no right to occupy Greenland. He also asked Washington to stop making threats against a close ally and the people of Greenland. Last month, Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US special envoy to Greenland. After Trump’s announcement, diplomatic tension between Washington and the Danish region increased again.
Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in gaining control of Greenland and has said he would not rule out using military or economic pressure to achieve this goal.
