Philippines Earthquake: An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude occurred on Wednesday (January 7) near the southern coast of the Philippines. This information was given by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Initially the intensity of the earthquake was said to be 6.7, but later it was measured as 6.4.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea about 27 kilometers east of the city of Santiago, located on the island of Mindanao. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 58.5 kilometers from the land. However, no tsunami warning has been issued yet.
‘I felt tremors’
Nash Paragas, who is involved in relief work in the eastern province of Davao Oriental, told news agency AFP that there are currently no reports of any deaths or injuries. He said, “I felt the shaking. I saw some cars shaking, but it was very brief. Maybe it was only for five seconds.”
Earthquakes had occurred before too
Earlier in the month of October, two earthquakes of 7.4 and 6.7 magnitude had occurred in Eastern Mindanao, in which at least 8 people died. A few days before this, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake had killed 76 people and damaged 72,000 houses in the central Philippines’ Cebu province. This information is given in government figures.
Earthquakes are common in the Philippines because the country is located in the Ring of Fire region of the Pacific Ocean. This area extends from Japan to Southeast Asia and the entire Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes occur frequently.
Know how earthquakes occur
Earthquake means shaking of the earth. When the ground trembles suddenly, it is called earthquake. This happens when the energy accumulated inside the earth suddenly comes out. The upper layer of the earth is called lithosphere. At many places inside this layer, rocks collide or slide among themselves. When this pressure increases too much and the rocks cannot bear it, they break or slide violently. Due to this, the earth vibrates and earthquake occurs. The strength of earthquake can vary. Sometimes the tremors are mild, which end in a few seconds. But sometimes the earthquake is very strong, due to which people can fall, buildings start shaking and the entire city can suffer huge damage.
