Why Asthma Gets Worse in Winter: Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, in which there is continuous swelling in the respiratory tubes. This disease is once again in the news, because Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Shri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on January 5 after suffering from breathing problem. According to Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the hospital, his bronchial asthma symptoms had increased slightly due to the effect of cold and pollution, hence he was kept in the hospital as a precautionary measure. The hospital administration said that his condition is stable and the treatment is responding well.
problem of asthma in winter
Increasing problems of asthma patients in winter is not a new thing. The number of asthma-related emergencies and hospitalizations increases every year during the winter season in North India. Especially the elderly, children and people already suffering from respiratory diseases are more affected.
What is bronchial asthma?
In bronchial asthma the respiratory vessels become extremely sensitive to external factors. According to the Global Initiative for Asthma, the main symptoms of asthma include frequent wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing at night or in the morning. In this disease, the airways become narrow, they become swollen and excess mucus starts forming, which makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. Symptoms can sometimes be mild and sometimes severe.
According to the World Health Organization, about 26 crore people worldwide are affected by asthma and every year it causes more than 4.5 lakh deaths, many of which are preventable with proper treatment.
Why does asthma worsen in winter?
Cold and dry air directly irritates the respiratory tubes, causing them to shrink and increasing difficulty in breathing. Pollution is also at its peak in winter. Particles like PM2.5 and PM10 present in the air further increase the inflammation of asthma. Apart from this, viral infections like flu and cold spread more in this season. People spend more time indoors in the winter, where dust, mold, pet hair and poor ventilation can also trigger asthma.
easy prevention measures
Doctors advise not to stop regular medicines and inhalers, cover the nose and mouth while going out, avoid going out when there is a lot of pollution, get flu vaccine, keep the house clean and ventilated and contact the doctor as soon as the symptoms increase. With timely identification, proper treatment and caution, asthma patients can avoid serious conditions and hospitalization.
