A woman died after being shot during the new immigration action of the Trump administration in Minneapolis city of Minnesota state of America. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot the woman inside her car. Federal officials say the woman tried to overpower the officers and the shot was fired in self-defense, while the city’s mayor has called the action negligent and unnecessary. The woman has been identified as Rainie Good. After the incident, tension and protests intensified in the area.
Firing took place in a residential area
This incident happened in a residential area of Minneapolis. US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said that the ICE officer shot the woman in her car. The woman died on the spot. Investigation of the matter is ongoing.
The entire incident was seen in the video
A video viral on social media shows an ICE officer approaching an SUV stopped in the middle of the road and asking the driver to open the door. He grabs the handle of the car. During this time the SUV starts moving forward.
Trump’s statement
Donald Trump wrote on social media- I have just seen the video of the incident that happened in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is very scary to see. The woman who was screaming was clearly a professional instigator and the woman who was driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing the officers and protesting. He then intentionally, violently and brutally overpowered an ICE officer, after which the officer fired at him in self-defense.
The officer standing in front opened fire
The video clearly shows that a second ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle immediately takes out his weapon and fires at least two bullets at the SUV from very close range. As soon as the vehicle moves towards him, the officer jumps backwards. It was not clear from the video whether the vehicle collided with the officer or not. After the firing, the SUV collided with two cars parked on the nearby footpath and then stopped. The woman was taken to the hospital, but the doctors declared her dead.
Trump administration’s action increased strictness
This incident is being considered a link to the ongoing immigration crackdown in big American cities during the Trump administration. Since the year 2024, at least five people have died during such actions in different states.
An atmosphere of fear in Minneapolis and St. Paul
DHS on Tuesday announced the launch of a large-scale immigration operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul. About 2,000 agents and officers are involved in this operation. This action is also said to be related to allegations of alleged fraud in some cases involving the Somali community. Since then there is an atmosphere of fear and restlessness in both the cities.
Protest after the shooting
After the incident, a large number of people gathered at the spot and raised slogans against the local and federal officials. The protesters raised slogans like ‘Shame’ and ‘Get ICE out of Minnesota’ and protested by whistling. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that immigration agents are creating chaos in the city. They wrote on social media, ‘We demand that ICE immediately leave the city and state. We stand strongly with our migrant and refugee communities.
Incident happened in sensitive area
The area where the shooting occurred is south of Downtown Minneapolis. This area is near the old migrant markets and is about a mile away from the same place where George Floyd died in police custody in 2020.
