Both potatoes and sweet potatoes are considered essential in Indian kitchen. On one side there is potato, which is called the king of vegetables, while on the other side there is sweet potato, which is known for its sweet taste and nutrients. Both are vegetables growing underground and their names in English are also similar. But when it comes to gut health, the question often arises as to which of these is more beneficial. In such a situation, let us tell you today that sweet potato or potato is the best option for gut health.

Connection of potatoes and gut health

Gut health is not limited to just digestion. Good gut health is directly linked to immunity, blood sugar control, weight and even mood. In such a situation, what we eat in our diet is considered very important. Potato is considered rich only in carbohydrates, but it contains some elements which are considered beneficial for the intestines. Actually, the resistant starch found in potatoes is not digested in the small intestine, but directly reaches the large intestine. Here it acts as food for the good bacteria and strengthens the gut microbiome. Apart from this, potatoes also contain fiber, vitamin C and B6, which support the process of digestion. However, if someone has problems with gas, acidity or flatulence, then potatoes in large quantities can be dangerous.

Sweet potato is considered gut friendly

Sweet potato is considered a better option than potato for gut health and this is because of the fiber and prebiotic properties present in it. Sweet potato peel is rich in fiber, which helps in increasing the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria improve digestion and provide relief from problems like constipation. Apart from this, resistant starch is also found in sweet potatoes, which allows the blood sugar to rise slowly and helps in keeping the stomach full for a long time.

Whose fiber is more effective?

Sweet potatoes contain almost twice as much fiber as potatoes. This fiber helps in maintaining proper digestion, reducing inflammation and regularizing intestinal activity. The amount of fiber in potato is low, but its resistant starch is beneficial for gut bacteria. Deep frying potatoes or sweet potatoes or eating them with excess salt and spices reduces their qualities. In such a situation, eating them by boiling, roasting or as a vegetable is considered good for gut health.
