A senior Trump administration official said the White House has indicated that it is ready to allow India to buy oil from Venezuela under US-controlled rules, increasing the chances of resuming trade stalled due to US sanctions.
According to the IANS report, when asked whether the US was ready to allow India to resume purchasing crude oil from Venezuela in view of Venezuela’s growing energy needs, the answer was clear. An administration official said yes, and also stressed that work on this is still going on.
The official referred to recent comments by US Energy Secretary Christopher Wright, who said Washington would be willing to sell Venezuelan oil to almost all countries. In an interview with Fox Business, Wright said that the US is again allowing oil extraction from Venezuela, but only under strict rules.
India was among Venezuela’s biggest oil customers
Let us tell you that before the US ban, India was one of the biggest oil customers of Venezuela, which used to purchase heavy crude oil to run its complex refineries. This resumption can help India diversify its energy imports, as demand is continuously increasing. Speaking at an energy conference in New York, Wright said the US currently plans to sell 30 to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, followed by continued sales of future production.

Meanwhile, Trump said that under the new agreement made after removing former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, America will sell up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil. Speaking at a meeting with senior administration officials and executives from some of the world’s largest oil companies, Trump described the move as an economic opportunity. He said that Venezuela is going to be very successful. Referring to the country’s oil sector, he said that we are taking back what was snatched from us.
