This time it is very cold in Bihar. Fog and cold have been wreaking havoc in most of the districts of the entire state including the capital Patna since mid-December. According to the latest reports of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bihar is experiencing continuous cold days and dense fog from December 2025 to January 2026, due to which there has been no sunlight for about 22 days. In such a situation, people are not getting enough sunlight, which is the main source of producing Vitamin D in the body. Doctors say that the risk of diseases is increasing among people due to deficiency of Vitamin D.
How is the weather in Bihar?
IMD’s reports for January 2026 show that orange alert continues in all 38 districts of Bihar. In late December and early January, there was dense fog from morning to evening, due to which visibility became very low. The maximum temperature in Patna remained around 14-15 degrees Celsius for several days and the minimum temperature dropped to 8-10 degrees. Cold day conditions persisted in northern, southern and central parts of the state. Meteorologists say that due to western winds the cold has increased and the fog may persist till mid-January. In such a situation, the risk of Vitamin D deficiency has increased greatly due to lack of sunlight due to fog.
Why is Vitamin D important?
According to doctors, Vitamin D is very important for our body. It strengthens bones, increases immunity, gives strength to muscles and keeps the brain healthy. 80-90 percent of the body’s vitamin D is produced from sunlight. For this, sunlight from 10 am to 2 pm is most beneficial, but when there is no sunlight for 22-25 consecutive days, there is a deficiency in the body. Vitamin D deficiency is already very common in Bihar. Many studies have revealed that 70 to 90 percent people in Bihar suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. A government survey of 2023 had revealed that 82 percent of the people in Patna district were deficient in Vitamin D.
How dangerous is Vitamin D deficiency?
Patna’s famous orthopedic specialist and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ashwini Gaurav said that due to deficiency of Vitamin D, bones and muscles become weak. There is pain in waist, knees and joints. Children may suffer from a disease called Rickets, in which the bones become crooked. The risk of osteoporosis increases in the elderly, that is, bones become very weak and break easily. Even a minor injury can result in a fracture. Due to weak immunity, frequent cold, cough and viral infections occur and it takes time to recover from the disease. The initial symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency are not very visible, but if there is pain in the bones, do not ignore it. You can try home remedies, but if you do not get relief in a day or two, consult a doctor and get your Vitamin D tested.
What happens due to Vitamin D deficiency?
Neuro surgeon Dr. Shyam Sundar has also warned that deficiency of Vitamin D has a bad effect on the brain. There may be lethargy, fatigue, irritability, sadness, depression and sleep problems. There is lethargy throughout the day, no desire to work. Recent studies have found that vitamin D deficiency increases the problems of depression and anxiety. Vitamin D reduces inflammation in the brain and controls the hormone serotonin, which is the hormone of happiness. At the same time, due to deficiency of Vitamin D, mood remains bad. Dr. Shyam Sundar says that if these symptoms are seen then get tested immediately. If sunlight is not available, the deficiency can be compensated with medicines, but before taking these medicines, definitely consult a doctor.
Women and children face these problems
According to doctors, vitamins have more effect on women and children. Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women does not cause pain during delivery. Due to this, the development of the child in the womb may stop and the bones may become weak. Height and weight do not increase in children. Also, hair falls, skin becomes dry and wounds do not heal quickly. The risk of diabetes and heart disease also increases.
How to protect yourself?
Doctors advise to eat as much fresh green vegetables and fruits as possible like spinach, mushrooms, milk and eggs, which are sources of Vitamin D. However, the main source is sunlight. When the sun comes out, leave it on the face, hands and feet for 15-20 minutes. Go out in cold weather wearing warm clothes. If Vitamin D deficiency is severe then take medicine from the doctor.
