Becoming an officer in the Indian Army is the dream of millions of youth. Serving the country by wearing uniform, maintaining discipline and protecting the country in difficult situations are all part of the life of an army officer. Indian Army is not just a job, but it is a symbol of respect, courage and responsibility. Every year thousands of youth prepare for different examinations to become officers in the Indian Army, but many students do not have a clear idea about which exams are required to become officers in the Army, what are the qualifications and how is the training done. If you are also dreaming of becoming an officer in the Indian Army after 12th or graduation, then let us tell you today which exam has to be given to become an officer in the army and how the study is done.
1. National Defense Academy (NDA) – If you want to become an army officer after 12th, then NDA is the best path. Its examination is conducted twice a year under UPSC. In which the written examination consists of Maths and General Ability Test, after passing the written examination, there is SSB Interview and then Medical Test. After this, 3 years of study and military training in NDA, Pune, 1 year of training in Indian Military Academy (IMA) or OTA, after completion of training, one is appointed as Lieutenant.
2. Combined Defense Service (CDS) – If you want to become an army officer after graduation, then you can give CDS exam. For this one should have graduation from any subject. In this too, examination is conducted twice a year under UPSC. The written examination is of English, General Knowledge and Maths. After this there is SSB interview and medical test. After selection, training is done in IMA (Dehradun) and OTA (Chennai), and after training, they are appointed as officers. Both permanent commission and short service commission can be earned from CDS.
3. Technical Entry Scheme (TES) – This entry is for those students who have taken Science in 12th. Physics, Chemistry and Maths in 12th, its selection process is shortlisting, SSB interview and medical test. There are 4 years of engineering studies and military training. On completion of training one gets the rank of Lieutenant.
4. Short Service Commission (SSC) – If you want to become an officer in the army for a few years, then SSC is a good option. In which SSC is for technical, engineering graduates and SSC non-technical is for other graduates. Its training takes place at OTA Chennai for about 49 weeks. In this, initially 10 years of service can later be extended up to 14 years.
5. Army Cadet College (ACC) – This path is for those soldiers who are already in the army and want to become officers. In this also there is written examination, SSB interview and medical test. After this, 3 years training in ACC, 1 year training in IMA and then appointment as an officer.
How is the education and training done to become an officer in the army?
To become an officer in the army, a candidate has to go through several stages, which include both studies and training. First of all, one has to prepare for the written examination, in which subjects like Mathematics, English, General Knowledge, Science and Current Affairs have to be studied. After passing the written examination, there is SSB interview, which lasts for about 5 days and in this, the candidate’s thinking ability, leadership qualities, confidence and ability to work in a team should be tested.
During SSB there is Psychology Test, Group Task (GTO), Personal Interview and finally Conference. After this, a medical test is conducted, in which the physical and mental fitness of the candidate is completely examined. After passing all the stages, the candidates are sent to the Army Academy, where along with studying for the degree, they are taught weapons training, physical practice, discipline and leadership.
