Physical Activity And Cancer Prevention: Just 10 minutes of vigorous and energetic exercise daily can not only increase your fitness but can also help in fighting intestinal cancer i.e. bowel cancer. This has been claimed in a study by researchers of Newcastle University. Let us tell you what came out in the research and which exercise to do and how.

What came out in the research?

Research has revealed that short but intense exercise produces organic changes in the blood within the body, which help in stopping the growth of cancer cells and speeding up the repair of DNA damage. According to researchers, during exercise, the amount of certain small molecules increases in the blood, which are related to reducing inflammation, improving the functioning of blood vessels and improving metabolism. When these exercise-induced molecules were used on bowel cancer cells in the lab, changes in the activity of more than 1,300 genes were observed. These also included genes that control DNA repair, energy production and the growth of cancer cells.

Where was the research published?

This study has been published in the International Journal of Cancer. According to research, exercise sends signals in the body that affect tumor growth and genome instability at the gene level. Dr. Sam Orange, who led the study, said that what is special is that exercise is not only beneficial for healthy tissues, but it also sends such powerful signals through the bloodstream that can affect thousands of genes of cancer cells. He also said that this research may open the way for future treatments that can mimic or strengthen the biological effects of exercise. This may make it possible to improve cancer treatment and patient outcomes.

Disadvantages of not exercising

The study also found that exercise increases the activity of genes that support mitochondrial energy metabolism, which allows cells to use oxygen better. At the same time, the activity of genes related to rapid cell growth decreases, which can reduce the attack of cancer cells. Additionally, blood taken after exercise promotes DNA repair and activates an important gene called PNKP.

30 people aged between 50 to 78 years were included in this research. All participants were men and women who were overweight or obese, but free from other serious diseases. He did high-intensity cycling for about 10 minutes, after which his blood samples were taken and analyzed for 249 proteins. Of these, 13 proteins were found to increase after exercise, including interleukin-6, which helps in DNA repair.
