After Venezuela, US President Donald Trump has once again started focusing on Cuba. Trump suggested that they should reach a compromise with Washington or face serious economic consequences.
Trump warned on Sunday (January 11) that Cuba would no longer get oil or money from Venezuela. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, ‘No more oil or money will be sent to Cuba. I advise them to reach an agreement before it is too late.
Cuban government on the verge of collapse- Trump
Trump argued that without Venezuelan support the Cuban government was on the verge of collapse. He had previously said that I do not think we need to take any action because without Venezuelan oil Cuba would automatically collapse. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio went a step further and indicated that Washington would probably not sit idly by.
Rubio said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ program that if I lived in Havana and was in the government, I would be worried. Trump later reposted a post that suggested Rubio could one day become Cuba’s leader. Trump said this seems right to me.
Cuba has been dependent on Venezuelan oil
The renewed focus on Cuba is due to the US military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. At the same time, for many years Cuba has been dependent on Venezuelan oil to run its economy and in return has been exchanging security and medical personnel. Cuba is facing a serious energy crisis after Maduro was removed from power and Trump put pressure on Venezuela’s interim President Delsey Rodriguez regarding oil supplies. Cuba has been dependent on oil and money from Venezuela for many years, that is why it is facing difficult circumstances.
Operation Mongoose (1961–62)
This is not the first time that America is showing its interest in Cuba. Even before this, the story of 1961-62 was also of a similar operation. The then US President John F Kennedy had approved a covert operation for economic sabotage and psychological warfare with the aim of destabilizing the Cuban regime. The documents show that some of the CIA’s plans were bizarre.
Explosive Cigar: A cigar that was rigged to explode.
Poisonous Milkshake: A poison pill was to be mixed in Castro’s drink at the Havana Libre Hotel.
Poisonous diving suit: A wetsuit full of viruses and contaminated breathing equipment.
Explosive Shell: A brightly colored shell, which was set to explode at the spot where Castro liked to dive.
Ex-girlfriend’s conspiracy: An ex-girlfriend was asked to poison him. It is said that Castro gave him a gun and asked him to shoot, but he refused.
Many of these plans were rejected as impractical or too risky and did not proceed. Let us tell you that since 1962, America has imposed a trade embargo on Cuba to create economic pressure.
