Submerged Cities: History is full of cities that reached the heights of greatness. But due to the havoc of nature, many such cities disappeared. Earthquakes, volcanoes, floods and development projects pushed entire settlements under lakes and seas. Today these places exist only in the form of ruins. the roman city that slowly sank
Baia was once one of the most luxurious resort towns of the Roman Empire. This city situated near Naples was famous for its hot springs, mild climate and luxurious villas. Roman aristocrats including Julius Caesar, Nero and Emperor Hadrian spent their free time here. However, Baia was situated in a volcanically active area called Campi Flegrei. Over the centuries, the land gradually sank due to a phenomenon called bradychism. Today most of Baia is submerged under several meters of water in the Mediterranean Sea.
Thonis Heraklion, Egypt
For centuries Thonis Heraklion existed only in ancient texts. It was believed that this was the city where Heracles first came to Egypt and where Paris and Helen stayed before the Trojan War. Once a major trading port at the mouth of the Nile River, the city flourished as a link between Greece and Egypt. Over time the city sank into the Mediterranean Sea due to a combination of earthquakes, rising sea levels and soil liquefaction.
Village sacrificed for water
Unlike many sunken cities lost to natural disasters, the Derwent, England, was sunk deliberately as a result of human planning. This village was submerged to create the Ladybower Reservoir. As industrial cities such as Derby, Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester expanded in the 20th century, their demand for water increased. The city was ultimately sacrificed when planners realized that two reservoirs were not enough.
Villa ApecĂșn, Argentina
It was a popular lakeside resort town built in the 1920s on the shores of Lake Apequen. It was a salt water lake which was believed to have medicinal properties. The water of the lake continued to rise and fall naturally for decades. However, after years of heavy rains the water level rose dangerously. In 1985, protection was lost due to a storm, which left the city submerged in 10 meters of salt water.
Port Royal, Jamaica
In the 17th century it was one of the richest and most infamous cities in the New World. Known as a pirate stronghold, it was a thriving center of trade, crime and wealth. A disaster struck in 1692. A massive earthquake followed by a tsunami caused the ground beneath the city to become liquid. All the buildings immediately sank into the sea. It is said that about 2000 people were killed in a single day.
