Well-known Bangladeshi singer and Awami League leader Prolay Chaki, who was a popular artiste of BTV in the 1980s, has died in custody. His family has alleged negligence and lack of medical treatment. Chaki was the secretary of cultural affairs in the Awami League of Pabna district. He was arrested on 16 December 2025 in connection with an alleged attack during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Proloy Chaki often shared the stage with his brother Moloy Chaki and became a popular face among the audiences of that era. Along with music, Proloy Chaki was also active in politics. He was working as the Cultural Affairs Secretary of Pabna district unit of Awami League. In this role, he used to organize cultural programs, give platform to local artists and ensure cultural participation in political activities. His identity was not limited to just one artist. This is the reason why his custodial death is not being considered just an ordinary incident, but a serious matter related to human rights and the prison system.
Arrest, detention and ill health
Proloy Chaki was arrested on 16 December 2025. His arrest came in connection with an alleged attack related to the anti-discrimination student movement. However, his family claims that at the time of his arrest his name was not registered in any FIR or case. After his arrest he was sent to Pabna jail. According to the jail administration, Chaki was already suffering from serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Pabna Jail Superintendent MD Omar Farooq said that his health continued to deteriorate during his detention. On Friday, he suffered a cardiac arrest, after which he was first taken to Pabna General Hospital. When his condition became critical, he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died during treatment at around 9 pm.
family allegation
Proloy Chaki’s family has accused the jail administration of serious negligence. His son Soni Chaki says that the jail administration did not officially inform the family about his father’s deteriorating health. Soni Chaki said, ‘My father was suffering from diabetes and heart disease for a long time. His condition worsened in jail, but we were not informed about it. When we got the news from other people, we reached the hospital, but by then it was too late. He did not get proper treatment, due to which he died. The family also says that there should have been special medical monitoring while keeping the elderly person suffering from such serious diseases in custody. This alleged lapse has made the entire matter more sensitive.
