It was claimed that the Indian government is going to make major changes in the mobile security system and under this, smartphone companies will be asked to share the source code of their devices. This news increased concern in the tech industry. However, now PIB Fact Check, the fact checking unit of the Government of India, has put forward the truth by calling this claim completely false.

According to PIB Fact Check, no such scheme or proposal has been presented by the government, in which mobile companies would be forced to share the source code of their phones or any secret code. The report on the basis of which this claim was being made has been described as misleading. It has been said in clear words that no such pressure is being put on smartphone manufacturers by the government.
After all, what is the source code of mobile?
The source code of a mobile is actually the original programming files from which the phone’s operating system and entire software is created. If we understand it in simple language, then it is like a map or blueprint of a building on the basis of which the entire structure is built. The source code of a smartphone decides how the device will work, how its features will operate and how the security system will be controlled.
Why don’t companies share source code?
The source code is very confidential because the technology related to the security of the phone is hidden in it. It contains information about how sensors will work, how data will be processed and how the system will be protected from hacking. If this code comes out, there can be a big threat to the security of the device. For this reason, mobile companies do not share their source code with any external organization.
Where did the root of the dispute come from?
In fact, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had talked about starting discussions on a regulatory framework to further strengthen the security of mobile devices. This is a normal process, in which opinions are taken from stakeholders so that the safety and security standards of the device can be improved. Misrepresenting this routine consultation, it was claimed that the source code would be asked from the companies.
