Serious and violent crimes like murder, dacoity, robbery and riots in Bihar have reached their lowest level in the last 20-25 years. The data from 2001 to 2025 shared by Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar shows that there has been a big change in the crime situation of the state. The crimes due to which Bihar was once associated with ‘Jungle Raj’ are now seeing a steady decline.
According to the data published in the newspaper, 3,619 cases of murder were registered in Bihar in the year 2001. This number remained above 3,000 between 2005 and 2015, but after that it started declining. There was a slight increase in cases in 2019 and 2020, but in 2025, murder cases dropped to 2,556, the lowest in two and a half decades.
Biggest decline in robbery cases
According to media reports, the biggest decline has been recorded in the cases of robbery. While there were 1,297 cases of robbery in 2004, this number dropped to just 174 in 2025. This means that in 25 years, the cases of robbery have decreased by more than 80 percent. The same trend was seen in robbery cases also. This number decreased from 2,909 cases in 2004 to 1,558 in 2025.
Cases recorded will drop to lowest in the year 2025
A historic decline has also been recorded in cases related to riots. There were 13,566 cases of riots in 2014, which reduced to 2,502 in 2025. This is the lowest figure since 2001. However, the increase in rape cases remains a matter of concern. This number increased from 746 cases in the year 2000 to 2,205 in 2024. There was a slight decline in 2025 and 2,025 cases were registered.
There has been a decline in cases of kidnapping for ransom
Despite the decline in serious crimes, total cognizable crimes have increased in Bihar. According to the information, the main reasons for this are theft, burglary, cyber crime, non-ransom kidnapping and other non-violent crimes. Theft and burglary have now become a major part of the total crimes. The reasons for increase in kidnapping cases are often said to be love affairs, missing children and family disputes. Whereas the cases of kidnapping for ransom have decreased.
