BCB breaks silence on ‘India Agent’ controversy, statement comes amid protests by players

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has finally broken its silence on the ‘India Agent’ controversy. The board has expressed regret over the statement of one of its directors M Nazmul Islam and made it clear that such comments do not reflect the official thinking or policy of BCB. The board has also warned that if anyone’s statement hurts the honor of the players or harms the image of Bangladesh cricket, then disciplinary action can be taken against him.

Actually, this controversy started when BCB Director M Nazmul Islam made objectionable remarks about former captain Tamim Iqbal, calling him an “Indian agent”. After this statement, protests started across the country. Players, former cricketers and fans called this comment extremely shameful. After this, Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) also took a tough stand and demanded the resignation of M Nazmul Islam.

BCB issued official statement

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued an official statement on the recent controversy saying that the board regrets all those comments which can be considered inappropriate, objectionable or hurting anyone’s sentiments. BCB clarified that such comments neither reflect the values and principles of the Board nor represent the official thinking of Bangladesh Cricket. The board says that dignity is expected from those who have been entrusted with the responsibility of serving Bangladesh cricket.

The Board also made it clear that the statement of any director or member, if not issued through an official spokesperson or media department, should not be considered as the opinion of the Board. Such statements are personal.

Emphasis on respect for players

BCB also said that it has full respect for all the cricketers of the country – whether current or former. The statement reiterated that the players are the backbone of Bangladesh cricket and their dignity, safety and future is the top priority of the board.

What did Tamim Iqbal say

Tamim Iqbal did not give this controversial statement, rather he had talked about resolving the current tension between India and Bangladesh through talks. This tension increased when, on the instructions of BCCI, Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for IPL 2026.

Tamim had said during the trophy unveiling of the Zia Inter-University Cricket Tournament in Dhaka on January 9 that there should be a discussion within the board before making public statements on such sensitive matters. He also said that the future of Bangladesh cricket is most important and decisions should be taken keeping that in mind.

open support of players

After M Nazmul Islam’s comments, many senior players posted on social media in support of Tamim Iqbal. Players like Mominul Haq, Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam clearly said that the insult to Tamim is an insult to the entire Bangladesh cricket.

Impact on T20 World Cup also

Amidst this entire controversy, there is confusion regarding the T20 World Cup to be held in India. BCB had demanded ICC to move its matches out of India citing the safety of the players, however ICC has rejected it.
