Our heart keeps working continuously. It pumps blood throughout our body and keeps us alive. When the heart works properly we feel healthy. If there is any problem in it, it can directly affect our entire body, hence it is very important to detect heart diseases in time. Nowadays doctors recommend angiography, but many people do not know about this test, what it is, how it is done and what precautions should be taken after it?

What is angiography test?

Angiography is a test that tells us how healthy the veins and arteries of our body are. If there is any blockage in the heart, brain or nerves of hands and legs, then this test helps in detecting it. When someone feels chest pain, difficulty in breathing or restlessness. Doctors often recommend getting this test done. Angiography is a simple way to see whether blood is flowing properly in the body or not.

How different is angiography from angioplasty?

Angiography and angioplasty are often heard together, but they are two different things. Angiography is just a test, which tells whether there is any blockage in the veins or arteries, whereas angioplasty is the method to remove that blockage. This means that angiography can find out where the problem is. At the same time, if necessary, it is treated with angioplasty.

How is angiography test done?

In this test, first of all a small tube called a catheter is inserted in the area where the doctor wants to examine the veins. This tube is inserted in the leg or arm. Through this, a special type of colored liquid (dye) is sent into the veins. When this liquid moves through the veins, the X-ray machine captures its path. With this, the doctor can clearly see whether the blood is flowing properly or whether there is any blockage somewhere. This process takes about an hour and after this the patient has to rest. After the test is over, the catheter is removed and the point where it was inserted is closed.

What happens when blockage occurs?

If blockage is found in angiography, then angioplasty or stent often has to be placed. After this, the patient has to take some special precautions, such as avoiding lifting heavy weight, staying away from alcohol and smoking, taking medicines regularly, and improving his diet. It is also important to do light exercise, consume fruits and vegetables and healthy oils, and reduce salt and sugar.
