Big upheaval in Telangana politics, Assembly Speaker rejects defection petition, BRS gets a shock

Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar gave his important decision on the disqualification petitions filed by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). During the proceedings held at the Assembly Secretariat on Thursday, the Speaker rejected the demand for action against Chevella MLA Kale Yadaiah and former Speaker and Banswara MLA Pocharam Srinivas Reddy on the grounds of defection. The Speaker clarified in his decision that based on the current records and evidence, both the MLAs are still part of BRS and no concrete evidence has been presented of their defection.

Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar said, ‘After a thorough investigation of the complaints and available documents, it was found that Kale Yadaiah and Pocharam Srinivas Reddy continue to be officially members of BRS. Factual evidence of his membership of any other party has not been found on record.

There is a political war going on regarding the change of MLAs.

This statement has come at a time when a legal and political battle has been going on in Telangana for the last several months over the switching of MLAs. The roots of this entire controversy are hidden in the developments after the 2023 assembly elections. After the formation of the Congress government under the leadership of Revanth Reddy, several BRS MLAs had met the Chief Minister, which the BRS termed as ‘defection’.

The party had approached the Speaker and the High Court demanding cancellation of membership of these MLAs under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law). The appearance of Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Kale Yadaiah in Congress programs was the main focus of this controversy.

Big blow to BRS

This decision of the Speaker is being considered a big blow for BRS, which is fighting a legal battle to save its clan. However, this decision is not limited to these two MLAs only, but it can also become a precedent for petitions pending against other MLAs in future. Political experts believe that BRS can challenge this decision in the higher court. At present, this decision has provided immediate relief to the MLAs facing the allegations of defection, but this power struggle in Telangana is not going to stop yet.
