Bharatiya Janata Party has issued a notification regarding the election of the National President. According to which the nomination process will be held on January 19, while the official announcement will be made on January 20. On the same day, Nitin Nabin will formally take charge at the BJP headquarters. Many senior party leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh will be present on this occasion. In such a situation, it becomes important to know how the national president is elected in BJP.
Does the Election Commission have any role in this?
The process of electing the national president of BJP is completely under the internal constitution of the party. The Election Commission of India has no direct role in this. This is an organizational election, which is conducted by the party itself. The Election Commission interferes only in matters related to general elections and constitutional posts, internal elections of the party do not come under its purview.
Who can become the national president of BJP?
According to the constitution of BJP, to become the national president, a person must be a primary member of the party for at least 15 years. Apart from this, he has to remain an active member for four terms. Only one who has been associated with the party for at least three years and has been participating in organizational activities is considered an active member. Although the party has made exceptions in some special circumstances, the rules at the level of the National President are considered quite strict.
The election process happens from bottom to top
Organizational elections in BJP start from the lowest level. First, primary committees are formed and elected. After this, organization is prepared at Mandal, District and then State level. The electoral college formed at the state level elects the state president. This board has members equal to the number of assembly seats in that state. In this, representation of women and reserved classes is also ensured.
What is National Council?
The National Council is formed with the election of the State President. The National Council itself elects the National President of BJP. It includes members equal to the number of Lok Sabha seats in the country. If women or reserved categories are not represented at any level, adjustments are made. Only when organizational elections are completed in at least 50 percent of the states, the process of electing the national president can begin.
Process from nomination to consent
The proposal for the name of the candidate for the post of National President must come from the National Council units of at least five states. Along with this, written consent of the candidate is also taken. Generally, efforts are made to create consensus for this post in BJP, so that the election is formal and unopposed.
What is the role of RSS?
BJP is considered to be the ideological political unit of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Although there is no mention of the formal role of RSS in the party’s constitution, in practice the opinion of the RSS is considered very important. Discussions take place between the BJP leadership and the RSS in major decisions from state to national level. The national organization minister of BJP also traditionally comes from RSS, due to which coordination between the two organizations is maintained.
