Indian Army soldiers are not governed by the General Service Rules but by the Army Act 1950. Once recruited or commissioned, a soldier’s service becomes legally binding. Resigning is not a right but a request. This request is valid only when the competent military authority formally accepts it.

The army exists to respond immediately to war, terrorism and internal security threats. Allowing soldiers to resign freely could weaken troop numbers in difficult times.
