US President Donald Trump has made a big announcement demanding the complete inclusion of Greenland into America. He has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European countries because these countries are against the sale of Greenland.
Tariff will remain in place till complete and complete purchase
Trump said in his social media post that from February 1, 2026, a 10 percent additional tariff will be imposed on all goods coming to America from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Finland. If no agreement is reached, this tariff will be increased to 25 percent from June 1, 2026. This tariff will remain in place until a deal is reached for the ‘full and complete purchase’ of Greenland.
Greenland is necessary for the Golden Dome
Trump claimed that Greenland is very important for America’s national security. He said that China and Russia are also keeping an eye on this Arctic area and Denmark cannot handle it. Trump mentioned the old missile defense system like ‘Golden Dome’ and said that without Greenland this system cannot function fully. He described America as having been trying to make this deal for the last 150 years and said that now is the time for Denmark to ‘give something’ because world peace is at stake.
Trump also said that recently soldiers of these European countries have reached Greenland, which is a ‘dangerous game’ and is posing a risk to the security of the planet.
Trump’s threats to France rejected
French President Emmanuel Macron gave a direct response to Trump’s threat. Macron wrote on X that France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations. He said, ‘Neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in such a situation, any threat or intimidation can influence us.’
Macron called the tariff threats “unacceptable” and said that if the threats came true, European countries would respond in a united and coordinated manner. They will defend European sovereignty. Macron said that France is involved in the exercises being held in Greenland along with Denmark, because it is related to the security of the Arctic and Europe’s borders. He will soon talk to other European partners.
Britain called the tariff completely wrong
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called it ‘completely wrong’. He said that Greenland is a part of Denmark and its future depends only on the decisions of the people of Greenland and Denmark. He further said that the security of the Arctic is important for all NATO allies and everyone should work together to deal with the threat from Russia. But imposing tariffs on NATO allies who are working for collective security is simply wrong.
Trump’s threat impacts transatlantic relations
Trump posted his post on January 17, 2026. European leaders have unitedly opposed this. Denmark and Greenland have clearly stated that Greenland is not for sale and its decision rests only with the people of Denmark and Greenland. Thousands of people demonstrated ‘Hands Off Greenland’ in Greenland and Denmark. The issue is raising tensions between NATO allies, as Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark and the US already operates a military base there. Trump’s threat may affect transatlantic relations.
