India Tariff: America lost its sleep due to India’s 30 percent tariff, American senator rushed to meet the Foreign Minister

India-US Trade: India is the largest consumer of pulses in the world, accounting for about 27 percent of global consumption. India also imports pulse crops on a large scale. These include many countries like America, Russia, Australia, Myanmar etc. To meet its needs, India imports peas, moong, pigeon pea and lentils from these countries. Recently, in response to the tariffs imposed by America, India imposed 30 percent tariff on American pulses.

India’s decision shocks America

Now, since India is a big market for agricultural products and especially pulses, America did not like this step taken by India. Republican senators Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota had also written letters to President Donald Trump regarding this. He had asked President Trump to talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the tariff on pulse crops and reduce it. Now in this connection, US Senator Steve Daines met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Sunday. During this, both of them discussed India-US bilateral relations and its strategic importance.

America suffers loss from India’s tariffs

Let us tell you that in their letter written on January 16, both Republican senators told President Trump that Montana and North Dakota are the top producers of pulse crops in America. In such a situation, their farmers are being harmed due to the tariffs imposed by India. India had imposed 30 percent tariff on America’s yellow peas from November 1. Due to this, American pulse producers are facing a huge competitive disadvantage while exporting their high-quality products to India. Both had urged the Trump administration to raise this issue during talks on trade deal with India.
