Especially regarding the post of BMC Mayor, it is believed that he is given a monthly salary of lakhs of rupees. But when the reality comes out, this thinking completely changes.
How much salary does BMC Mayor get?
First of all, let’s talk about BMC Mayor, the Mayor is not given a fixed salary like any government officer. He gets honorarium every month. This honorarium is around Rs 6,000 per month, which sounds very little but the total income of the mayor is not limited to this amount only. They also get various types of allowances depending on different official meetings, programs and responsibilities. Including all these, the average monthly income of the Mayor reaches around Rs 50,000 to Rs 55,000. If seen accordingly, the annual income of the BMC Mayor is around Rs 6 to 6.5 lakh.
Even though the mayor’s salary may not be high, he is given many important government facilities. This includes government accommodation, government vehicle, driver, security and staff. Apart from this, the expenses of official tours and programs are also covered at the government level.
Income of BMC councilors?
BMC councilors are also given honorarium and not salary. In the year 2017, in view of rising inflation and work pressure, the honorarium of councilors was increased. After this, the monthly honorarium of councilors was fixed at Rs 25,000. But the total income of councilors does not end here. Their income depends on how active they are in municipal corporation meetings.
Councilors’ earnings increase through meetings
Councilors who regularly attend the meetings of the General Body, Standing Committee and other committees get additional allowance. This increases their total monthly income. At the same time, councilors who attend meetings less or do not play an active role do not get the benefit of additional funds.
If seen only from the monetary point of view, sometimes the total income of an active councilor can be equal to that of the mayor or even a little more. But in terms of position and responsibility, the role of the mayor is much more important. The Mayor represents the entire Municipal Corporation and has a role in major level decisions.
