Gujarat Giants had to face defeat by 61 runs at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 on Monday. Giants captain Ashley Gardner looked disappointed with this defeat. He cited missed chances and catches as the reason for the defeat. Along with this, he stressed that the team will have to unite as soon as possible and win the remaining two matches.
After the crushing defeat at the hands of RCB, Gardner said, “It is very disappointing. When you drop catches and they score runs, these are the small moments in which we are not able to win right now. We have to win the last two matches, but it is disappointing. You have to fight. There is a lot to be learned from this match, which is a good thing, but it is not good to stand here after the defeat.”
Explaining her approach, the Giants skipper said that the inconsistent bounce of the pitch affected her plans, and she encouraged her to play across the line, considering herself a better match-up against Smriti Mandhana.
“We knew we had to take advantage of the wicket. The bounce was not necessarily perfect. The bounce was inconsistent. I am a good matchup against Smriti. Just asking her to play across the line, knowing she is good on the square of the wicket,” she said.
RCB, who came to bat first at the BCA Stadium, scored 178 runs losing 6 wickets. Gautami Naik scored the highest score of 73 runs for this team, while Richa Ghosh played an inning of 27 runs. From the opposition camp, Kashvi Gautam and Ashley Gardner achieved 2 successes each.
In response, Gujarat Giants could score only 117 runs after losing 8 wickets in 20 overs. For this team, Ashley Gardner scored the highest score of 54 runs in 43 balls, while Anushka Sharma played an inning of 18 runs. For RCB, Sayali took 3 wickets, while Nadine de Klerk took 2 wickets. With this win, RCB has entered the next round.
