Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Nabin was appointed the new national president of the party on Tuesday (January 19, 2026). He has reached this high post in place of Jagat Prakash Nadda. This appointment is the result of an extensive internal selection process, which started from the lowest level and reached the national level.

The appointment of 45-year-old Nitin Nabin is being considered a sign of BJP’s organizational strength and emphasis on generational change ahead of the upcoming crucial state elections (Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Uttar Pradesh) and the 2029 federal elections. Party sources also said that one of the objectives of Nabeen’s appointment is to clearly differentiate herself from the leadership of 84-year-old senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge of the rival Congress.

Who is Nitin Nabin?
BJP insiders, especially those who have worked with him, describe him as hard-working, politically curious and with a party-first mentality. He is seen as down to earth, accessible and a person of ‘coordination’.

His caste identity of being from the Kayastha community was also considered in his favor as this community is considered politically neutral and does not come into conflict with other groups.

Experience and organizational credentials
Nabin’s appointment is not just to ensure uniformity of ideology among the top leadership. Despite being 45 years old, he has almost two decades of organizational experience. Starting from the youth organization of the party in Bihar, he moved forward in fulfilling election responsibilities. An important task among these is to bring BJP back to power in Chhattisgarh by defeating Congress.

Minister has been in Bihar
He has been MLA five times. In 2006, he won from the now defunct Patna West seat of Bihar and after that he won from Bankipur four times in a row. He also has experience as a minister, having held the responsibility of Law, Roadways and Urban Development departments of Bihar for a short time. His experience at the party level includes the posts of National General Secretary of BJP’s youth organization Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and President of the organization’s Bihar unit.

Chhattisgarh’s ‘magical’ victory
In 2023, Nitin Nabin was given the command of BJP in Chhattisgarh assembly elections. At that time, Congress was considered to be in a strong position under the leadership of Bhupesh Baghel and most of the surveys were predicting the victory of Congress. But under the leadership of Nabeen, BJP won with a clear majority.

Political analysts attributed its success to comprehensive action planning, organizational restructuring and coordination at the micro level. This organizational acumen will also come to the fore in Nabin’s new post, as the BJP already has a strong grassroots platform and is now planning a historic fourth consecutive Lok Sabha victory.

Also played important role in Delhi elections
Perhaps more than his own victory in Bihar, the Chhattisgarh campaign put him on the path to becoming the BJP national president because it showed his ability to meet tough political challenges and being the BJP president is considered one of the toughest responsibilities in itself. Apart from this, Nabeen also played an important role in bringing BJP back to power in Delhi, which strengthened BJP’s political hold in the capital after almost three decades.
