Common Health Problems In Adolescent Girls: Parents often say about their children that “she is just a child, she will be fine on her own.” This thinking may seem natural, but the reality is that childhood and adolescence are very important periods in terms of health. The changes taking place in the body and mind at this age affect the entire life ahead. India has the highest number of teenagers in the world. The adolescent population worldwide is about 16 percent of the total population, i.e. about 1.2 billion people. There are 25.3 crore teenagers living in India alone, which is about 20.9 percent of the country’s population.

There can be many problems in childhood

According to the World Health Organization, this period of transition from childhood to adulthood is full of major changes at the physical, mental, hormonal and social levels. While this age provides many opportunities for development, health risks also increase during this period. Contrary to popular belief, adolescence is not a “disease-free” age. During this period, many health problems like lack of nutrition, mental health problems, early pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, other infections, violence, accidents and drug addiction come to the fore.

According to a PIB report, many serious diseases have their roots in adolescence itself. Many deaths occurring at this age are preventable or treatable. Despite this, many adolescents remain struggling with life-long illnesses or disabilities. According to WHO data, every year about 13 lakh adolescents lose their lives due to diseases which can be treated or prevented.

Problem increasing rapidly in girls

Taking girls’ health seriously today means preventing many problems tomorrow. Speaking to TOI, Dr. Neeraj K. Deepak said that obesity, malnutrition, metabolic diseases and mental health problems at an early age are increasing rapidly in today’s teenage girls. Sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, study pressure and excessive screen time are the major reasons for this. Doctors are now also seeing cases of puberty starting at an early age and hormonal disturbances, which can lead to serious problems in the future.

Lack of proper diet is the biggest cause of disease

Regarding nutrition, doctors say that lack of proper diet is a major reason for this problem. Excessive processed food, sugar and carbohydrates, while lack of fruits, vegetables and protein leads to problems like obesity, anemia and weak immunity. Not eating on time and irregular eating habits also affect the body’s metabolism and hormones. Doctors say that lack of physical activity in childhood can later lead to problems like obesity, weak bones, heart and kidney related diseases, diabetes and arthritis. Therefore, daily exercise and sports are very important for children.

Experts say that if habits like right eating habits, adequate sleep, regular exercise and limited screen time are adopted since childhood, then girls can be kept healthy for a long time. Only early precautions can make life better and safer.
