The Mayo Clinic warns that brushing too soon after such acidic foods can remove the top layer of teeth. The acid already softens the enamel and brushing can wear it down further. At the same time, according to a report in the Daily Mail, while talking to the New York Times, dental expert Dr Howard R. Gamble said that brushing can drive the acid deep into the teeth, causing damage to both enamel and dentin. Research has found that brushing teeth within half an hour of drinking soft drinks causes them to weaken rapidly.

In one study, dentin samples were placed in the mouths of volunteers and the effect of brushing at different times was observed. Brushing within 20 minutes of drinking a soft drink caused obvious damage to the teeth. At the same time, negative effects could be avoided by waiting for about an hour after eating spicy food. Researchers say that to protect teeth, there should be a gap of at least 30 minutes after eating acidic food. This gives saliva time to neutralize the acid and teeth remain safe when brushing.
