Fresh protests have started after the shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretty by immigration agents in Minneapolis, America. Earlier on January 7, American citizen Renee Good was shot dead.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Preeti tried to approach agents with a pistol and then turned violent when disarmed. In the video going viral, Preeti is seen trying to save a female protestor from chemical spray on a snow-covered footpath, when an agent pulls her onto the snowy road.
Who was Alex Jeffrey Pretty?
Let us tell you that 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretty worked in the US Department of Veterans Affairs and had participated in the protests organized after the murder of Renee Good by an immigration officer on January 7. Preeti was an American citizen and was born in Illinois. Court documents revealed that he had no criminal record and his family said that his contact with the police was limited to a few traffic citations.
What DHS said
According to an Associated Press (AP) report, during a recent phone call, his parents, who live in Colorado, asked him to stay safe while participating in the protests. DHS described the incident as an assault and said a Border Patrol officer acted in self-defense when a man allegedly approached with a gun and resisted when officers tried to take the gun.
However, in the video made by people present nearby, Preity is shown holding a mobile phone instead of a gun. In the footage, he is seen trying to help other protesters who were thrown to the ground by officers. News agency Reuters has confirmed this footage.
