Dhaka has expressed surprise at former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s public address in Delhi. The Bangladesh government said that it was surprised that India allowed absconding former PM Sheikh Hasina to address the public in the capital New Delhi.
Sheikh Hasina, 78, left her country and came to India in August 2024, when her 15-year rule ended following massive protests during the student movement in Bangladesh. After this, on Friday (January 23, 2026), Sheikh Hasina gave her first public speech through audio message in a packed press club in the capital Delhi.
Dhaka’s reaction to Sheikh Hasina’s speech
The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh expressed surprise by issuing an official statement on Sheikh Hasina’s speech in Delhi. The ministry said, ‘The government and people of Bangladesh are shocked and shocked that fugitive Sheikh Hasina, who has been convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity, was allowed to deliver a statement at a public event in New Delhi on Friday (January 23).’
The ministry said that allowing Hasina to deliver the speech sets a dangerous precedent, which could seriously damage bilateral relations. The statement said, ‘Organizing this event in the Indian capital and allowing mass murder perpetrator Sheikh Hasina to openly deliver hate speeches is a direct insult to the people and government of Bangladesh.’
India has not yet acted on its responsibilities – Bangladesh
The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry further said in the statement, ‘Bangladesh is deeply saddened that India has so far not been able to act on its responsibilities to hand over Sheikh Hasina under the bilateral extradition agreement. Despite repeated requests from the Bangladesh government, Hasina was allowed to deliver the inflammatory speech. This is a clear threat to the democratic transition, peace and security of Bangladesh.
What did Sheikh Hasina say about Mohammad Yunus??
In her audio address broadcast online, Sheikh Hasina said that free and fair elections can never be held in Bangladesh under the leadership of interim leader Mohammad Yunus.
