US Winter Storm: The severe snow storm that hit America has seriously affected life in large parts of the country. According to the National Weather Service, due to heavy snowfall and rain, about 18 crore people have been affected, which is almost half of the total population of America. The storm, which spread from the Southern Rocky Mountains to New England, caused increased slippage on roads, disrupted power supply and resulted in a sharp drop in temperature. Emergency-like situations arose in many states, due to which the administration had to issue alerts.
Snow storm caused chaos
The biggest impact of this storm was seen on air traffic. According to news agency Associated Press, more than 14 thousand flights have been canceled since Saturday, while on Sunday alone more than 10 thousand flights had to be cancelled. According to flight tracker website Flight Aware, operation of planes was no longer safe due to bad weather. Dallas, Fort Worth, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport were the most affected, where thousands of passengers were stranded for hours.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, while giving information on its website, said that all 450 flights there have been cancelled. In view of this situation, airlines have advised passengers to check the status of their flights before reaching the airport.
If passengers are stranded at the airport or hotel, they have been asked to contact customer care or online reservation staff. Airlines have also clarified that in most cases flights can be re-booked without any extra charges, provided seats are available.
What to do if your flight is cancelled?
Additionally, if a passenger’s flight is canceled and he or she does not wish to travel, airlines are legally required to provide a full refund, even if the ticket is non-refundable. Both the administration and airlines have appealed to passengers to avoid non-essential travel until the weather becomes normal and give priority to their safety.
